ABS Seminar: “Environmental updates for the Maritime Industry”

ABS highlighted some of the recent environmental regulations and issues that impact ship and offshore operations. Speakers from ABS’ Environmental Solutions Group addressed topics of importance to the Greek maritime industry, including significant developments in environmental regulation decided at the IMO’s latest Marine Environment Protection Committee meeting, MEPC 62.

An overview focused on ship emissions, including exhaust scrubbing and emission monitoring technology in relation to MARPOL Annex VI. Additionally, the IMO’s adoption of the Energy Efficiency Design Index was discussed along with the soon to become mandatory development of Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plans.
The last updates for ballast water treatment technology and regulations were also covered and the status of the IMO Ballast Water Management Convention was discussed together with the critical legislation in the United States both the federal and state level.

Mr. Vassilios Kroustallis, ABS, welcomed the guests of the seminar and introduced the speakers. Mr. Johnny Eliasson, ABS, referred to “Emission Abatement & Monitoring Systems”.
Regarding NOx reduction Mr. Elliason remarked that there are post combustion emission cleaning devices on the market and this method will be part of the solution for tomorrow.
Market is somewhat – new – with many different solutions proposed making it hard to review. For Nox, SCR is the most mature technology but the industry faces a challenge with so many different designs. Standardization of technologies would benefit the market.
