Preventing and reducing the impact of emergency situations has to be a constant pre-occupation for ship managers – ashore and afloat. So often a minor incident, a matter to be closed by an insurance claim, is turned into a serious loss involving injury and death by the failure of the crew, often under their master’s direction, to handle the situation appropriately.

So often losses involving injury and death are not caused by the initial accident or incident but by the measures subsequently taken by the crew to recover the situation. How can this problem be overcome? Perhaps it cannot. Perhaps merchant ships crews simply lack the experience to address serious situations well.
