Greek shipowners “invest” on the market recovery

Greek owners have invested more than $2.2bn in the first half of the year, acquiring more than 12.5million dwt, according to a report by Intermodal Shipbrokers.

Intermodal’s George Lazaridis says the increased activity is no surprise. “There had been a lot of Greek owners who had been waiting for quite some time to invest on the market once the price levels were right. The candidate
buyers had a sense of a more favourable future prospect”.

He says many of these buyers are also thinking that 2013 will most likely be the low point in the current cycle. Greek owners are leading the way when it comes to newbuildings. They have ordered 65 units so far this year, spending a total of $657.5m for over 6.6 million dwt.
