There is much the mariner apprentice has to learn before being entrusted with the duties of a bridge watch officer. Having acquired them, the duties of a senior officer have to be understood; they embrace the responsibilities for loading, stowing and discharging cargoes, handling

ballast, managing trim, draft, sheer force and bending moments and leading the deck team with deck maintenance and operations. The ultimate stage involves taking command as a master, The three stages are recognized in the STCW’s certification with the levels Master Mariner C, B and A. These three levels of certificate are clearly identified with separate courses of instruction in the nautical colleges and by examination.
